What is a chromed bottle?

A chromed bottle refers to a bottle made by plating chromium as a coating on other metals. The chromed bottle is a kind of silvery white metal with a blue tint. Introduction to the chemical properties of chromed bottle

First of all, chromed bottle has good chemical stability. It has no effect in alkali, sulfide, nitric acid and most organic acids, but it can be dissolved in hydrochloric acid (such as hydrochloric acid) and hot sulfuric acid. In the visible light range, the reflectivity of chromium on the surface of the chromed bottlechromed bottle is about 65%, which is between silver (88%) and nickel (55%). Because chromium does not change color, it can maintain its reflectivity for a long time during use and is better than Silver and nickel.


In addition, the chromed bottle has a very high hardness. Depending on the composition of the plating solution and process conditions, its hardness can vary within a wide range of 400-1200HV. chromed bottle has good heat resistance. When heated below 500℃, there is no obvious change in gloss and hardness. The temperature will start to oxidize and change color when the temperature is above 500℃, and the hardness will decrease when the temperature is above 700℃. The friction coefficient of chromed bottle is small, especially the dry friction coefficient, which is the lowest among all metals, so chromed bottle has good wear resistance.

From the commonly used chromed bottle, compared with other single metal plating solutions, although the composition of chromed bottle is simple, the chrome plating process of chromed bottle is quite complicated, and has the following characteristics.


①The main component of chromed bottle is not metal chromium salt, but chromium's oxyacid-chromic acid, which is a strong acid plating solution. There are three abnormal phenomena: current efficiency decreases with the increase of chromic anhydride concentration and l increases with temperature. It decreases; it increases with the increase of current density.

②In the chromed bottle, a certain amount of anions must be added, such as SO42-, SiF62-, F-, etc., to achieve the normal deposition of metallic chromium.

③The dispersing ability of chromed bottle is very low. For parts with complex shapes, pictographic anodes or auxiliary cathodes are needed to obtain uniform chrome plating. The requirements for hangers are also stricter.

④The chromed bottle needs to use a higher cathode current density, usually above 20A/dm2, which is more than 10 times higher than the general plating. Due to the large amount of gas evolved from the cathode and anode, the resistance of the plating solution is large, and the tank pressure is increased, which requires a high electroplating power supply. A power supply greater than 12V is required, while other plating types can use a power supply below 8V.

⑤The anode of the chromed bottle does not use metal chromium, but uses an insoluble anode. Usually lead, lead-antimony alloy and lead-tin alloy are used. The chromium consumed in the bath due to deposition or other reasons needs to be supplemented by adding chromic anhydride.

⑥The operating temperature of the chromed bottle has a certain dependence on the cathode current density. Changing the relationship between the two can obtain chrome plating with different properties.

①The surface roughness of the chromed bottle substrate before plating: the smaller the substrate surface roughness value, the smaller the surface roughness value after plating.

②The temperature of chromed bottle plating solution: the surface roughness value will be greater after the temperature is high

③Current density: the greater the current density, the greater the surface roughness after plating

④Concentration of chromed bottle plating solution: the greater the concentration of the plating solution, the greater the surface roughness value after plating.

⑤Chromed bottle plating time: the longer the plating time, the greater the surface roughness value after plating.
